What is Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT)?

CSAT measures satisfaction with a specific interaction or feature — “how satisfied were you with X?” on a short scale — reported as the percentage of positive responses. It is a transactional metric, asked in the moment.

Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT), in depth

CSAT’s specificity is its strength: asked right after onboarding, a support reply, or a new feature’s first use, it isolates the experience being rated. A product can hold strong overall loyalty while one flow quietly scores terribly — CSAT is how that flow gets caught.

Because it samples moments, CSAT is noisy at low volume and biased toward users who complete flows (the abandoners never see the survey). Read trends and gaps between touchpoints, not day-to-day wiggle, and pair scores with open-text follow-ups for the actionable detail.

Putting it into practice

Reserve CSAT prompts for a few touchpoints that matter, and route the free-text follow-ups into your feedback triage rather than a dashboard nobody reads. An always-on feedback button catches the same friction continuously between survey moments — the two instruments complement rather than compete.
