What is Feature Request?

A feature request is a user asking for a capability the product does not yet have. Individually it is an anecdote; collected and counted, requests become a demand signal that can genuinely steer a roadmap.

Feature request, in depth

The craft of handling feature requests is separating the request from the underlying need. “Add an export button” might mean “I need this data in my weekly report” — and the best solution might be a scheduled email, not a button. Teams that interrogate the need behind clusters of requests ship smaller things with bigger effect.

Requests also need an honest lifecycle. Users who ask and hear nothing stop asking; users who see “planned,” “in progress,” or even a considered “not planned” keep contributing. The lifecycle is what turns requests from a pile into a conversation.

Putting it into practice

Collect requests privately, cluster duplicates, and publish only credible candidates for public validation. In TellTide, promotion to the roadmap is that step: published requests collect votes and comments, and status changes notify the interested users when the answer arrives.
