Feature voting, in depth
Votes are the cheapest honest signal in product work: one click, no writing, and users spend them on what they actually want rather than what they felt like posting about. The aggregate is a demand curve the team did not have to survey for.
Votes mislead in two known ways. Fragmentation — the same need phrased five ways splits its support — is fixed by merging before publishing. Population skew — voters are your most engaged users, not your average ones — is fixed by treating votes as one input alongside revenue impact and strategy, not as a binding referendum.
Putting it into practice
Vote on a curated list, not an open pile: when the team publishes deduplicated, credible requests, every vote lands on a real candidate. That is TellTide’s model — voting happens on the public roadmap, only on items the team promoted from the private inbox.
