What is Product Roadmap?

A product roadmap is a communication artifact showing where the product is headed — what is planned, in progress, and shipped — at whatever fidelity its audience needs. It expresses strategy as a sequence, not a promise of dates.

Product roadmap, in depth

Roadmaps serve different masters in different forms: execution roadmaps coordinate teams internally, strategy roadmaps align leadership, and customer-facing roadmaps build trust externally. Collapsing these into one document serves nobody — the level of commitment and detail each audience can handle differs fundamentally.

The modern consensus has moved from timeline roadmaps (features pinned to quarters) toward status- or theme-based ones (now / next / later), because dates on discovery-stage work are fiction that will be quoted back to you. Status columns communicate momentum without manufacturing deadline debt.

Putting it into practice

Decide the audience first, then the form. For customer-facing use, a status-based board of deliberately chosen items — the model TellTide hosts — shows responsiveness without over-promising, and voting on items turns the roadmap from broadcast into instrument.
