Voice of the customer (VoC), in depth
VoC programs range from a founder reading feedback over coffee to enterprise operations with dedicated analysts. The scale varies; the principle does not: customer statements are collected deliberately, organized into themes, and given a route into decisions. What disqualifies a “program” is feedback that is collected but never aggregated or acted on.
The classic VoC trap is channel sprawl — surveys here, interviews there, support tickets elsewhere — with no common taxonomy, so themes cannot be counted across sources. Small teams do well starting with one structured channel and one taxonomy, expanding only when the first loop reliably closes.
Putting it into practice
Start with unsolicited, structured input (a categorized widget), because it flows continuously and needs no scheduling. Consolidate other channels via API so everything shares one inbox and one set of categories — TellTide’s API exists precisely so support escalations and custom forms can join the same stream.
